What is Jumbo Stampede?

A US appeals court last week gave Laos another chance to pursue casino entrepreneur John K. Baldwin and his company, Bridge Capital, for the money.

The ruling is the latest twist in a dispute dating to 2012 that has involved allegations of government interference, a failed settlement, and three international arbitration awards.

Baldwin and fellow casino entrepreneur Shawn Scott arrived in Laos in 2007 with ambitious plans to build a casino business aimed partly at customers crossing the country’s borders.

“I remember gambling all of it back the same day because they couldn’t pay it out in full immediately,” he says.

The win completely changed his relationship with gambling. In Madsen’s words: “That jackpot was really the beginning of my gambling addiction.”  It was an addiction that was propelled by a constant exposure to illegal sites, he explains.

The cycle eventually became extreme.

Sun International vowed to retain and redeploy employees to other areas of the business where feasible.

During H1, Sun International also implemented its new “Casino Lite” model, aimed at improving profitability at smaller, underperforming properties.

The model focuses on enhancing adjusted EBITDA and operating margins by optimising operations, both in terms of gaming and hospitality.
