“Even though we are seeing legalization of sports wagering, it is still a violation of NCAA rules. I do think people and member institutions really need to make sure that their student athletes are aware, so that they don’t walk themselves into any kind of issues,” she said.

“We feel that people are always interested in gambling and that we are the party who should offer that in a safe way. Speaking of which, in Holland the casinos must have two databases, one for online players, one for land-based, and keep them very separate – except for when it comes to responsible gambling (RG). A casino can’t use its online offering to promote the land-based side to players, and vice-versa – but the data can all be used together to make sure customers are safe from harm whenever they play with the same operator, online or otherwise.

The absence of governance policies aligned with current regulations and Instagram’s algorithmic recommendations reveals not only an ecosystem that fuels gambling as an alternative to work, but above all, points to a systemic risk in which Meta is a major player. This risk can only be effectively addressed by expanding the obligations of digital platforms.

In this sense, it is necessary to expand the regulatory norms of the SPA and the National Data Protection Agency, beyond transparency reports and the mandatory removal after notification of official administrative decisions, but also with the mandatory inclusion of social and technological resources for monitoring, identifying and moderating this ecosystem.
